I’ve always wanted to stay at the Renaissance Toronto Marriott Hotel I thought it was a cool hotel with views of the Rogers Centre Stadium from the rooms and located right in the heart of downtown Toronto. I had to add an additional night to my weekend in Toronto and wanted to stay close the convention centre without paying $250+ a night for a hotel room and when a TravelZoo deal came up for $99 a night stay I jumped at the chance. After spending three fabulous nights at the Intercontinental Toronto Centre down the street I was optimistic that the Renaissance would live up to its 4 star rating and high standard. The added appeal of staying at a hotel in the Rogers Centre with the possibility of another view of the CN Tower or the inside of the stadium was very exciting.

I arrived at the hotel around noon on Sunday, I was a bit early again and was happy to hear that my room was ready for an early check-in. I didn’t have a lot of time to absorb it all when I first walked into my room.  I just walked in dumped my bags, saw that I had a view of a building, sighed and headed back to the conference. When I arrived back at my room later that evening the reality set in.

Location: Toronto, Ontario

The Marriott Renaissance hotel has a phenomenal location, just steps to the CN Tower, Metro Toronto Convention Centre and many of Toronto’s tourist attractions and entertainment districts. However many of the rooms over look the railway lines into Toronto’s Union Station and I was the lucky recipient of one of these rooms.

I’m actually shocked that this hotel is still rated a 4 star. The room was very outdated, with an old wooden desk and an old and very uncomfortable desk chair. Online they sell the room as having an ergonomic chair – um no way this was back friendly. There was a lounge chair and ottoman which I used to do my work on which was awkward but much more comfortable.

The bathroom was OK a little run down, usual Aveda bath products you expect from a stay at a Renaissance hotel, hair dryer, sink and tub. The shower head could use some CLR it was lime scale covered and sprayed in every direction. There was no fluffy robe, the towels were scratchy and no slippers.

The bed was decent, however the pillows were old and flat. I put my head down and it indented the pillow and it was permanently uncomfortable. Did not have a great sleep trying to adjust the pillow for some neck support all night. Then there is the sound of the trains going by. Did I mention that the hotel was located above the main train tracks leading in to Union Station?

At night it wasn’t too bad every now and again the rumble of the train going by, but in the morning around 6:50 AM it was non-stop. Train after train running into the station. There was no sleeping through it.

I ended up getting up early and escaping to a Starbucks for a decent coffee and a break from the train noise. Which brings me to coffee. This is my personal pet peeve and I don’t understand why a four star resort doesn’t offer decent coffee in the rooms with real milk? A Keurig machine is available with substandard coffee and powdered milk should you be interested.

No in-room safe? Really for a hotel in Toronto’s business district with a convention centre at it’s footsteps? Need I say more.

Wifi was included in my TravelZoo deal however it appears that normally it is not included. I recommend the hotel re-think this as its normal going rate is $160+ and if you are going to spend that much and stay in the room I got stuck in well you’re going to have a lot of unhappy guests. At $99 I was feeling disappointed.

Hotel Amenities

I only stayed here one night and frankly I was happy to leave. I did walk to the lounge area which overlooks the stadium and its seemed like a nice place to sit and mingle. It is also a restaurant and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The hotel also has a fitness centre and pool which I did not visit.

Dream Travel Magazine Does Not Recommend This Hotel

Unfortunately, and I don’t know if this was due to getting the cheap deal on the room or not. I would not recommend this hotel. I felt like I do when booking a 4 star hotel in Cuba it’s actually more like a 3 star quality. It was an adequate stay for one night, but I don’t think I would recommend it at its full price or for a lengthy stay.
